Terrazzo consists of chips of marble, granite, quartz, glass, shell, or other suitable materials. It uses either a cement or epoxy matrix as the binder. Metal strips divide sections, make color transitions, design decorative patterns or logos and allow for movement or crack mitigation.

The origins of terrazzo can trace their roots across the globe and as far back as ancient Egypt, but modern-day terrazzo that we use today began its story around 500 years ago in Venice, Italy. Venetian artisans of the time began to take the discarded chips from marble slabs and imbed them into concrete mixtures.

The terrazzo trend, also known as seminato di marmo or "Venetian terrazzo", arose in Venice in the 1960s and early 1970s when masonry workers took advantage of the marble pebbles left over after building work and mixed them with clay.
