MARVEL OF THE MIDDLE AGES It is easy to see why Regensburg was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2006: As an ensemble, the Old Town is simply unique. Regensburg is the best-preserved medieval city in Germany. Almost 1,000 monuments are located closely together in the city center, forming a bridge through time.

Regensburg is famous for its UNESCO-designated Old Town, including some 1,500 heritage buildings, such as the 800-year-old Stone Bridge, 9th-century Alte Kapelle, and the roughly 900-year-old Historic Sausage Kitchen of Regensburg, one of the oldest restaurants in the world.

Etymology. The first element was first attested as Regino and Reginum in the 3rd and 4th century. A Castra Regina was mentioned around 400. The Latin term is derived from Regana, the name of the river Regen which empties into the Danube at Regensburg.

The historic fabric reflects some two millennia of structural continuity and includes ancient Roman, Romanesque, and Gothic buildings. Regensburg's 11th to 13th century architecture still defines the character of the town marked by tall buildings, dark and narrow lanes, and strong fortifications.
